SOMA Joins the Global Movement: 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

Today, November 25th, marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a powerful international campaign advocating for a world free from violence and inequality. The Somali Midwives Association (SOMA) is proud to join this movement, dedicating the next 16 days to raising awareness and fostering change. With a firm commitment to promoting gender equity and safety, SOMA has planned impactful activities to engage and inspire communities across Somalia.

Planned Activities for 16 Days of Activism

Educational Campaigns
SOMA will spearhead awareness initiatives to educate communities about the prevalence, causes, and impact of gender-based violence (GBV). These campaigns aim to challenge harmful norms and encourage individuals to become advocates for change.

Community Dialogue
Open forums will be hosted to provide a safe space for community members to share their insights, experiences, and solutions regarding GBV. These dialogues will help amplify diverse voices and foster collective understanding and action.Engagement with Men and Boys
SOMA recognizes the critical role men and boys play in combatting GBV and fostering gender equality. Activities will include:

  • Men’s Engagement Programs: Facilitating discussions on masculinity, respect, and their role as allies in ending GBV.
  • Sports Events: Organizing inclusive sports activities to promote teamwork, respect, and this year’s theme, “Tracing the Roots: Standing Against GBV.”

Why This Campaign Matters

Gender-based violence remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations worldwide, disproportionately affecting women and girls. Through education, dialogue, and community engagement, SOMA seeks to address the root causes of GBV, empower survivors, and inspire actionable change.

This year’s theme emphasizes the importance of tracing and addressing the underlying cultural and structural factors that perpetuate violence. SOMA is committed to driving meaningful change and creating safer, more equitable communities.

Join Us in the Fight Against GBV

As we embark on these 16 days, SOMA invites everyone to participate in the planned activities and take a stand against gender-based violence. Together, we can create a world where safety and respect are universal rights.
